How to cleanse and charge your crystals at home
4 min read · Updated 19 September 2026

Every piece we send out is cleansed and charged in the studio first. After that it is yours to look after. Most people cleanse a new stone when it arrives, and again whenever it starts to feel dull or heavy. Here is how we do it, and what to avoid.
Five ways to cleanse
Pick whichever suits your home. One is enough.
- Smoke. Light white sage or palo santo, let the flame go out, and pass the stone through the smoke for half a minute. Safe for every stone.
- Moonlight. Leave the stone on a windowsill overnight, ideally around the full moon. Safe for every stone.
- Sound. Ring a singing bowl or bell near the stone for a minute. Useful when you have many pieces.
- Selenite. Rest a bracelet or small stone on a selenite plate or tower overnight.
- Running water. Hold the stone under the tap for a few seconds and dry it fully. Only for hard stones; see the list below.
Keep these away from water
Some stones are soft or porous and water damages them. Selenite slowly dissolves. Pyrite and hematite can rust. Malachite, turquoise and lapis lazuli are porous and can lose their polish. For these, use smoke, sound or moonlight.
Salt water is harsher still. We do not recommend it for any polished stone or for bracelets, because it weakens the elastic.
Keep these out of strong sun
Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine and aquamarine can fade if they sit in direct sunlight for days. A few minutes of morning sun is fine. A south-facing windowsill all summer is not.
Charging with an intention
Once the stone is cleansed, hold it in both hands, take three slow breaths, and say clearly what you want it to help you with. One sentence is enough. Traditionally this is repeated whenever you cleanse the stone again.
Crystals are sold as spiritual and decorative items. What is written here describes tradition and our own practice in the studio. It is not a substitute for medical, financial or professional advice.
